AUNTSFIELD ESTATE - MARLBOROUGH, NEW ZEALAND

Auntsfield is Marlborough’s first vineyard and winery. It was originally established in 1873 and made highly regarded wine for over 50 years. A statue of David Herd, Auntsfield’s founder and first winemaker, has recently been erected in Marlborough as a tribute to the father of Marlborough’s wine industry.

Today Auntsfield is still a boutique family-owned Marlborough vineyard and winery. Now under the guidance of the Cowley Family, who purchased the property in 1998, Auntsfield is once again producing premium wines with a focus on the highest quality Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Brothers Luc and Ben Cowley bring renewed care and passion to the key roles of Winemaker and Viticulturist. Their artisan-style reflects a new age of handcrafted wines from Auntsfield, whilst still reflecting the unique site and heritage of this special Marlborough vineyard.

Auntsfield is unique with extensive North facing hills and a variety of soil types. The prominent influence is a very old soil called Loess. This is a very fine dust that has blown from the far side of the valley and has been deposited at Auntsfield as a thick layer of clay over very old Grey Wacky rock. The very fine Loess clay imparts texture and richness to Auntsfield wine, while the old rock and mineral influence give the elegance and stature of the wine.

Ben and Luc Cowley spend a lot of time working in the vineyard and winery to help capture these distinctive characteristics. Needless to say, they are extremely quality-focused with a lot of hands-on work. This coupled with low cropping vines and an artisan approach in the winery is helping to produce extremely high-quality wines which have gained a strong following around the world.
