For Somerset Maughan, the French Riviera was ‘a sunny place for shady people’. For writer and lawyer Alex Wade, it’s where a chance encounter with John O’Hare, an expat British businessman, led to the creation of www.footyonthemed.com, football’s most sun-drenched, not to mention eccentric, podcast. The pair talk about hobnobbing with the ultras of Monaco, Nice and Marseille, drowning in the sound and fury of the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa, what the bending tower of Pisa has got to do with football, and how it was that Boris Johnson and Tom Jones have been guests on the podcast. 

Alex Wade is a writer and lawyer. His most recent book, A Season on the Med – Riviera Football in Italy and France (With a Trip to Athens for Stan), is a blend of Mediterranean-themed reportage, memoir and travelogue, as well as a hymn to Alex’s childhood hero, the Queens Park Rangers striker Stan Bowles. Alex was due to start work on a follow-up book, exploring football on various Mediterranean islands, but the real world intervened. The book is on hold following Alex’s acquisition of law firm Reviewed and Cleared, of which he was the CEO and of which he is now both owner and CEO. However, thanks to John O’Hare – a businessman who made his name in the United States and who now lives in Menton – ranging around the Med is still a big part of Alex’s life. Together, John and Alex co-host Footy on the Med, rated by experts as fourth in current lists of the Top Five Best Ways to Have Fun on the French and Italian Rivieras.
