KOKORO ZENWEAR - RAISING THE STANDARD FOR SUSTAINABLE ECO-FASHION WITH BAMBOO FASHION COLLECTION

The Dublin-based fashion brand offers a luxurious alternative to cotton and silk that doesn’t cost the earth. Kokoro Zenwear’s bamboo silk and bamboo sport collection is 100% ECO Certified and OEKO- TEX Certified sustainable organic.

Eco-conscious fashionistas now have a sustainable alternative to cotton and silk garments with the luxurious bamboo fashion collection from Dublin-based company, Kokoro Zenwear.

Cotton and silk are two popular natural fibres used in garment manufacturing. However, the production processes used to produce the fabrics are neither eco-friendly nor sustainable. Silk is a luxurious fabric, but it takes up to 2500 silkworms to produce one pound of raw silk. And since silkworms only eat mulberry leaves, it is a significant drain on natural resources. As it relates to cotton, the plants require 29.000 litres of water to grow - the same amount that one person would drink in 27 years.

Conversely, not only is bamboo a renewable resource, it requires very little water and can grow up to 4.5 ft per day. What’s more is that fabrics made from bamboo are softer and more comfortable than 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton.

Kokoro Zenwear is disrupting the status quo on sustainable, eco-fashion with their bamboo fashion collection. The brand offers the first handmade, Irish luxury, unisex organic bamboo clothing and accessory line. The collection includes a range of fashionable items from bamboo silk sleepwear to bamboo sport activewear and accessories.

All the fabrics used by the company are 100% ECO Certified and OEKO-TEX Certified sustainable organic. Their bamboo sport fabric is made from bamboo that is broken down and dissolved into a solution. It is then pressed into fibres, cooled and later spun into threads, which are then woven into fabric. The bamboo sport collection boasts the aesthetics of cotton with the ultra-soft feel of silk. But that’s not all. This fabric is moisture-wicking, temperature regulating, hypoallergenic, antimicrobial and offers 60% UV protection.

The Bamboo Silk is made using the same process as the Bamboo Sport; however, the fibres are dried in the sun to give the fabric a shiny satin finish. This fabric combines the light, airy feeling of silk with the added benefits of bamboo. The antimicrobial and breathable characteristics of bamboo fabrics lend itself well to face coverings. That’s why the company recently added a not-for-profit Carewear masks collection to help the general population and those on the frontline protect themselves from the CoronaVirus.

Engineer and Martial Artist, Nader Fahm and Fashion Designer, Sharon Farren are the founders of Kokoro Zenwear. Kokoro is a Japanese word which means ‘your heart, your soul, your spirit’. When asked about the motivation for creating the brand, Farren explained: “We like to think globally and act locally. We also wanted to make a tangible impact on the fashion industry by introducing positive, ethical and organic clothing. This is our contribution in helping to save the environment.”

This motivation is reflected in the company’s sustainable approach.
