Ingredifind - Food To Help Calm Your Anxious Mind by Monica Price

Ingredifind - Food To Help Calm Your Anxious Mind by Monica Price

Anxiety is a complicated mental health disorder that requires a multitude of approaches to manage it effectively. Along with medication and therapy, the foods you eat may help support your mental health, reduce symptoms of anxiety, and promote better brain health.

Overcoming anxiety without medications involves making lifestyle changes, and that includes changing your diet. There are foods that will help cure anxiety and foods that will contribute to anxiety, and by choosing the right foods, you can drastically cut down on the amount of anxiety you experience and help to improve your mood. Here are some of my top foods to eat, and what to avoid.

Whole grain foods

Whole grain pasta, rice and bread have several powerful benefits for those with anxiety. Anything whole grain is rich in magnesium — and magnesium deficiency may lead to anxiety. It also contains tryptophan, which becomes serotonin — a calming neurotransmitter. Whole grains create healthy energy while reducing hunger — both important for anxiety.

Seaweed

Seaweed has many of the same benefits as whole grains. Not only is it rich in nutrients — it also has a high magnesium content, and kelp and other seaweed have a high tryptophan content. Seaweed is a good alternative to whole grains for those that are gluten sensitive.

Fish

Fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, trout and herring are high in Omega 3s. They are incredibly important and are a type of fatty acids that have a strong relationship to cognitive function and mental health. Many studies have shown that by adding fatty fish to your diet can help to improve your anxiety and also depression.

Dark chocolate

Swap your milk chocolate for dark! Research has found that dark chocolate or cocoa may improve your mood as it is a rich source of polyphenols, especially flavonoids. Chocolate is another source of tryptophan, which the body uses to turn into mood-enhancing neurotransmitters such as serotonin in the brain. Dark chocolate is also a good source of magnesium. It’s important to look at the chocolate that contains 70% cacao or more, and only a small amount is needed.

Brazil nuts

Brazil nuts are high in selenium, which is an antioxidant that is important for the cells in our body, and this may improve your mood by reducing inflammation, which is often at heightened levels when someone has a mood disorder such as anxiety. Other nuts and vegetables, such as mushrooms and soybeans, are excellent sources of selenium as well — and you only need to eat three or four brazil nuts a day to have all that your body needs.

Chamomile

Chamomile is a daisy-like plant most commonly used to make tea with and has long been associated with its calming and relaxing effects. There is also evidence to suggest chamomile may be effective for reducing depression and it is rich in polyphenols — many of which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Foods to avoid

Making sure you are not eating foods that contribute to anxiety can play an important part. Examples of these types of foods could include fried foods, high glycaemic carbohydrates, refined sugars, and alcohol. A good idea is to write down any food that react or trigger an anxiety attack. If you have a panic attack for example, you may want to avoid coffee, because coffee can increase your heart rate and could be a trigger for an attack. But if you have more general anxiety then coffee may actually be beneficial. Many find that caffeine, in small quantities, can actually help reduce stress and improve mood.

Never underestimate the power of food..

Metabolic Balance - The Importance of Exercise in Everyday Life - If You Rest, You Rust!

Metabolic Balance - The Importance of Exercise in Everyday Life - If You Rest, You Rust!

Whether at home, in the office or at school: In the typical daily routine of a modern person, most of the time only the chairs are changed, the body posture remains practically the same: In the morning, we move from the breakfast chair to the car and from there to the office chair. At lunchtime, it's enough to take a few steps to the canteen seat, and after work is done, you drive back home in the car to make yourself comfortable on the sofa.

No wonder that almost 60% of office workers complain about back problems. How problematic it is for us to develop into a sedentary society can already be seen in the children. Exercising a lot, playing around outside, testing one's own physical abilities – in the past this was a matter of course. Today, more and more children are involved in accidents because they exercise too little. They are often unable to direct and control their movements, lack muscle strength and responsiveness, and their sense of balance is underdeveloped.

However, age plays only a minor role when talking about exercise. Almost everyone can exercise in a beneficial way. Most people know how important exercise is in everyday life. As it is correctly said in the proverb: "If you rest, you rust." Regular exercise helps to minimize body fat and reduce the risk of high blood pressure and secondary diseases. Tension, back and joint pain can also be successfully counteracted in this way. Exercise is a wide field and is not exhausted in endurance sports and gym. It starts with, for example, avoiding the car when driving to work and instead riding a bicycle. If you cycle to work every day, even if it is only 15 minutes to get there and 15 minutes back, you do half an hour of exercise every day!

It is important that you sweat at least once a day and the body is lightly challenged. For example, by deliberately forgoing the elevator and climbing stairs instead. Or if you go shopping on foot instead of driving.
It is not beneficial for the organism to spend hours in front of the computer or on the couch. Prolonged sitting can lead to blood circulation problems in the legs and feet.

Therefore, you should shift the weight as often as possible while sitting. It is also good to move your feet while sitting, lift your toes and heels to relieve the veins, or lift both heels off the ground and bounce in your knees. At home on the sofa you can lie down on your back, just lift your legs in the air and “cycle” for a few minutes. Muscles are also trained in this way, fat is burnt and blood circulation is stimulated. Perhaps these exercises sound quite trivial to you: but – every step counts!

Globe Business College Munich - Five Important Skills Your Teenager Should be Taught in High School

FIVE IMPORTANT SKILLS YOUR TEENAGER SHOULD BE TAUGHT IN HIGH SCHOOL

Why personal development matters in modern education

The world is moving faster than ever. Technological innovations come out every day that change the way we operate, from simple tasks like writing to more complex events like entertainment. Even larger job-related skills are quickly being converted into automated flows with robotics, AI, and machine learning.

A lot of these new developments excite our young people – and they should. It’s the world they’ll be living and working in. But as they get excited and plan to take their next steps after high school, are they going to be truly prepared to enter university and the job market? As educators, we’ve seen a growing problem: education that ignores the student’s personal development.

Here are five skills we think your teenager should be taught (and continuously work on) beginning in high school:

Time Management

Learning time management as a skill enables your son or daughter to effectively and efficiently divide their time between different activities, thus maximizing how effective their efforts are. A person who understands the value of their time understands the value of their tasks. They’ll be able to decide if something must be done, delayed, delegated, or deleted from their schedule. Learning this at a young age will help to balance assignments, exams, and additional responsibilities like work or family. And of course, these habits will carry over to university, helping their experience to feel more under their control. Practicing effective time management as a teenager will make this extremely valuable skill second nature when they enter the job market.

Bigger Picture Thinking

With the rapid changes we previously discussed, everyone is thinking about the future and wondering what it will look like. When your son or daughter is taught to see a challenge, goal, or idea in a broader vision, then break down the abstract concept into what actually needs to be done to accomplish the idea, they’re practicing bigger-picture thinking. This skill is a strategy that focuses on the entirety of what’s to come instead of obsessing over the details or the unknowns that might feel overwhelming. Anytime they feel overwhelmed, stopping to ask, ‘What am I really moving towards with my actions?’ will help them to refocus, realign, and understand the importance of their current movement.

Grit, Passion, and Determination

Many people will say grit can’t be taught, but we disagree. We absolutely believe that grit exists in all of us and sometimes, just needs to be nurtured and encouraged. Often times young people fail to develop grit, or the passion and determination needed to achieve long-term and meaningful goals, simply because they’re told they have all the time in the world to accomplish what they want. While they may, this is a huge disservice because grit, passion, and determination are not simply how badly they want to achieve something, nor are these important skills a symbol of their natural talent. Instead, grit, passion, and determination are harnessing the power behind wanting a goal so badly that you choose to organize and structure your actions in such a meaningful way that to fail would almost be impossible. When a young person is nurtured and shown they can develop such focused intensity, their sheer determination can often overtake someone else’s natural born talent. Grit comes from high levels of self-control and self-consciousness. If your son or daughter can control and use these to empower their growth, the challenges of the future might not seem so intimidating.

Empathic Exchange

Communication is hard and with the digitalization of conversations through text, messenger, and social media, we’ve seen young people who have lost the ability to read body language or understand unspoken communication. In the classroom and in the job market, we have expectations for professional and pragmatic conduct. These are rooms and spaces where emotions create more challenges than comfort, and can often create conflict when one doesn’t understand how to be a part of the larger conversation taking place outside of just the words being spoken. When your son or daughter learns how to hold empathic exchanges, they can change or impact the direction or even person of the conversation. Empathic exchange helps to build relationships, trust, and more honest conversations. From speaking with their teachers to leading extracurricular activities to networking and even interviewing for their first internship, this skill will be invaluable in their personal development journey.

Communication

We’ve listed communication last because it’s largely touched and impacted by the four previously mentioned skills in this list. Any form of speaking, writing, or any other medium our young people are exposed to, such as social media, sends a message that helps them to define who they are and how they want to interact with other people. When we say we need to teach the young people in our lives to be better communicators, we don’t mean train them to speak. We mean teach them to have the confidence to develop their own style of expressing their points, to stand up and do so with their head held high, and have confidence in their opinions, knowledge, and belief systems. Effective communication builds stronger relationships and helps your son or daughter to express their feelings and thoughts in a more efficient manner. The stronger their communication skills, the more likely they are to stand up for themselves, ask for help, or stand up for their beliefs in the classroom and job market.

All five of the above skills are strong as individual learning points, but when paired together, will create a truly dynamic, capable, and confident human. The next time you have the opportunity to speak to those educating your teenager, ask them what they’re doing to help your son or daughter develop these five crucial skills (time management, bigger picture thinking, grit passion and determination, empathic exchange, and communication).

At Globe Business College Munich, these five skills are the cornerstone of our educational philosophy. In 2006 we had the vision of creating a third level business college in Munich that combines the Irish and German approaches to education. The dream back then was to develop students who can combine the science and art of business. So graduates, who in addition to their formal academic qualifications, have the ability to think on their feet, operate in dynamic environments, have great people skills, communication abilities and are driven by a growth mind-set. That vision has materialised into a college that is filled with individual students who benefit every day from a unique educational approach. This uniqueness comes from the fact that at the core of everything we do is a relationship model that puts the individual at the centre.

Ingredifind - 90 Days In - How Are Your New Year's Resolutions Going?

Was January the month that you set New Year’s resolutions by starting a new diet or thinking about change? The first few months of the year are often a time when you look at your health and wellbeing and set out to make changes.

But 90 days in have you stuck to your goals? Rather than setting yourself something that may be difficult for you to achieve, try looking at more realistic goals to help you feel better about yourself.

Try the SMART approach — Small, Manageable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.

Diet

· Instead of starting a new “fad” diet — simply make your diet healthier by adding more fruit, vegetables, fish, lean meats and plant based foods to your weekly menu

· Cut down on your sugary food and drink. Too much sugar in your diet can not only lead to weight gain, but also affects the way your pancreas produces insulin, increasing your risk of Type 2 Diabetes

· Use your freezer as your friend and cook more than you usually do. You can then portion these into containers, and you are ready to have a healthy meal in minutes when you don’t really want to cook

· Try making delicious and tasty vegetable soups. You can add any left over vegetables, beans, lentils, spinach, watercress, onion and garlic for a dish packed with essential nutrients

· Instead of eating your fruit cold — why not slice and warm it up. Good choices are apples, fresh/frozen berries, pineapple or orange. These can easily be frozen so you have them to hand

· Try swapping one of your snacks high in far, sugar and salt to a healthier option. By simply swapping 1 or 2 sugary snacks can really make a difference to a healthier you

· Keep your body hydrated and drink more water. Your body is mostly made up of water — nearly two thirds — so it’s important to aim for 6 to 8 glasses a day. Try having a glass of water, instead of a fizzy drink or coffee for example. Add fresh fruit to your water to change the flavour. Hydration is needed for your heart and circulation, digestion, for temperature control and for our brain to work well

Exercise

· Go outdoors as much as you can during daylight hours and embrace nature. A short walk or cycle ride is not only good for your body, but exercise helps to release endorphins and contributes towards a better mood and wellbeing

· If you are unable to go outdoors then make sure you have plenty of indoor plants. They not only look nice, but research has found that a friendly bacteria in plant soil (Mycobaterium Vaccae) triggers the release of serotonin, that can help alleviate symptoms of low mood and depression

· Variety is important, so take up a new hobby that you really enjoy — you are more likely to stick to it if it’s something that makes you happy

Remember you have a whole new year to make changes, so treat your New Year as a marathon — rather than a sprint.

An Interview with Jessica and Nisha Stockmann of Villa Monaco - Why Always Sons and Not Daughters?

Club Vivanova Interviews Jessica and Nisha Stockmann - Why Always Sons and Not Daughters?

Jessica, you founded and run a company together with your daughter. What is special for you about working together with your daughter?
I can have a very honest exchange with my daughter. Nisha has her incredibly good taste and her very own ideas and of course I have mine, but we cross-fertilise each other and don't slow each other down. Not only did she study architecture and spatial design, she also grew up in several countries and cultures and therefore thinks very internationally and is part of the new, young generation, the generation Z that values completely different things.

Nisha, you work with your mother. A good feeling?
So far, yes! But if things were to change, we would find a way. I learned from my mother that there are always solutions, so I have no fears that we could clash professionally. Our recipe for peaceful and successful coexistence is communication, and that has always been a top priority in the Stockmann family.

Did you have to set up rules in advance, along the lines of separating private and business matters?
We don't need any new rules. My mother always had a lot of respect for the younger generation and therefore took me into the team on an equal footing. She often tells me that she can learn a lot from me. I studied spatial design and my mother is more of a self-made woman. So we complement each other very well and are not in competition with each other.

Many young women have little desire to keep close ties to their parents even after their education. What is different with you?
My grandmother was super close with my great-grandmother, my mother was inseparable with her mother, that somehow seems to run through the family and I am super happy that it is so.

Jessica, your company is called Stockmann. Why not Stockmann & Daughters?
I thought long and hard about calling us Stockmann & Daughters, but I didn't want to put pressure on my two daughters to work with me one day. My big daughter Nisha decided on her own, but my little daughter Nicita is only 18 and started university. She is studying Media & communication management.

She should be free to decide where her career path might take her. In our projects, we run under Stockmann³ because we see the cubic metre and thus the whole space and not just the square metre. And the 3 actually also stands for 3 generations. Our desire is to create spaces in which three generations also feel comfortable.

It is noticeable that there are hardly any companies that have a "& Daughters" in their name instead of the familiar "& Sons". Do you have an explanation for this?
There are certainly historical reasons for this. Daughters did not enter the workforce in the past and even fewer took over family businesses. In the past, a woman was responsible for the household and the children, not for the company. In 1920, women were not even allowed to study in Germany and 100 years later, a minority of companies are still run by women.

To set an example, I would actually have to call my company Stockmann & Töchter, but that would create immense pressure on my girls. And what will we do when a grandson comes into the house? The poor boy might need his place too (laughs).

What drives you in your joint activities?
(Jessica) - Above all, we enjoy our projects and divide our tasks very well. Of course, there is a moment in every project when you feel like throwing everything away, but we like to take responsibility, a virtue that is often dying out, so once we start a project, we see it through to the end. Only when there is a bouquet of flowers on the table and at least one candle burning is the project ready to move in.

Jessica, you are still known above all for your acting and your moderations. How did you get into real estate?
After 15 very successful years in show business, I became a mother and a short time later I was a completely unplanned single parent. I was looking for a solution that would allow me to be a mother and earn money to give my daughters and me a good life with the best education. I was looking for a new challenge that would allow me to travel less and, above all, spend more time with my children.
The construction industry seemed more mother-friendly than the TV industry, which involves many night shoots and long journeys. Not knowing that as a woman I was entering a total male domain, I took out very large loans and began to buy and renovate properties with the corresponding risk. My business studies helped me with the calculations, and my father was and still is my great advisor. I wanted to create, but no longer in front of the camera and created new stages for myself with my building sites, which I now directed. All of a sudden I was producer, director and actor in one, but on the construction site.

What qualifications did you have to acquire to be successful in the luxury real estate segment?
(
Jessica) - I constantly and always have my eyes open. In every restaurant, hotel or airport - I look everywhere to see which materials have been processed and how. In the luxury segment, it's all about quality that lasts 100 years. But we also have to know exactly what is "in" and trendy at the moment. Of course, working with Nisha is worth its weight in gold. She knows exactly what the young target group wants. I, on the other hand, know what the 30-70-year-old customers value. The best thing is to come up with something that doesn't yet exist. Customers pay more for luxury than for standard, but their demands are disproportionately high. Just "chic" is not enough. It has to be sustainable, elegant, modern and yet traditional with various design highlights.

And do you like to take risks professionally?
Of course, I would prefer a safe business without risk, but that's hardly possible. Every success requires courage, but my investments have never really felt courageous to me because I was so sure I was doing the right thing. In retrospect, I often realised how brave I was.

Nisha, you started studying architecture with the specific focus of working together with your mother?
No, to be honest, that's how it turned out. Even as a 6-year-old, I preferred building entire cities and hotels with Lego to playing with dolls. My mother often tried to make me like Barbie, but to no avail. All I ever wanted to do was build. During my studies I made various plans, sketches and mood boards for my mother. At some point she started handing me the Excel spreadsheets and said: "Since you're not studying business, I'll explain to you on the basis of our real estate how it looks with the somewhat boring, uncreative things, because just being creative is often not enough to understand the context". Before I knew it, I was helping her prepare the tax returns. My mother cleverly offloaded that onto me - (laughs).

What makes a nice property for both of you?
(Jessica) - Location is important and the property or plot has to feel good from the start, no matter what condition it is in. Our goal is that you feel so comfortable in the finished property that you don't want to leave it rain or shine. Accordingly, we build, renovate and design.

How do you proceed when you find a property that is exciting for you?
(Jessica) - The most difficult thing is "finding". We search daily, keep our ears open and work with various estate agents. Somehow it's just like with interpersonal relationships. They don't just lie around on the street. But when it "clicks", everything often happens very quickly. When we fall in love with a property, everything happens at breakneck speed. We try to look at the property several times, and film and photograph it, in order to later highlight the advantages and resolve the disadvantages.
Then we get a surveyor, and after that comes the loan. Once that's in place, we go to the notary and as soon as we're registered in the land register, we tear out the first walls and the fun begins (both laugh).
