Vegan Wines Are Becoming More Internationally Popular as a Preferred Wine Style - But What Exactly is a Vegan Wine?

Wineries have long used (natural and organic) animal proteins such as isinglass, albumin, casein, gelatin and chitin to remove impurities and sediment from wines. Vegan wineries instead use charcoal, diatomaceous earth, and bentonite and kaolin clays as “fining” agents, or produce unfiltered and unfined (“raw”) wines.

What exactly is vegan wine?
The production of wine is a complicated process that includes a range of factors to obtain the exact end-result that the winemaker is looking for. One step in the production of wine often includes a process called fining (or "clarifying"). A fining agent is added to the top of the vat. As it sinks down, particles adhere to the agent, and are carried out of suspension. The fining agent and the gathered particles then are removed either by filtering or through a settling process.

Fining agents are typically either animal, carbon or clay-based products and are used to gather proteins or sediment within the wine to adjust impurities such as colour, haziness, taste and/ or smell. Animal-based fining agents include gelatin (made from the boiling of animal parts), isinglass (form of gelatin derived from fish bladders primarily used to clear white wines), albumen (whites of a raw chicken egg. It is most commonly used in the clarification of red wines to remove excess tannins), and casein (main protein found in cow's milk, used in both red and white wines to treat and prevent oxidation).

Different agents will be used based on the desired outcome of the wine and the winemaker's preference. In fact, bull's blood was also used in some Mediterranean countries but (as a legacy of bovine spongiform encephalopathy - mad cow disease) is not allowed in the U.S. or the European Union. Because the fining agent is filtered back out of the wine, the labeling of these additives are not required or regulated in most places.

Vegan/ Vegetarian Alternative Fining Agents
As an alternative to animal products, carbon, bentonite (a clay mineral), and polyvinylpolypyrrolidone are the most common to be used to clarify wine. Some vintners also let the wine's sediments settle naturally, a time-consuming process. In Australia, winemakers are required to list the use of potential allergens such as casein and albumin on the label but are not obliged to list the use of other non-vegan fining agents such as gelatin or isinglass. In the EU, regulations only stipulate that wines fined using milk or egg products (both allergens) must be clearly labelled.

So there are numerous wineries, not using animal products and they may label their wines as vegan. Some winemakers will boast on the wine label that their wine is unfiltered, because they believe that fining removes desirable flavours and aromas, and some wine connoisseurs prefer wine to be unfiltered. There is also a growing trend in natural wines, which are vegan and unfiltered by their very nature.

We regularly list vegan wines in our Brad’s Wine Subscription cases.

More in demand than ever, people are seeking respite and healing by investing in long stay nature inspired retreats to enjoy a life of imbued wellness equipped with working spaces so that work can continue from a space of inspired tranquility and reflection. One of our Corporate Partner Callender Howorth’s newest projects, Broughton Hall, is just this kind of place.

A historic sanctuary in the English countryside of Yorkshire dating back to 1597 that has been under the custodianship of the Tempest family 33 generations for the last 900 years.

The serene nature of this 3000 acre property is idyllic for the restorative healing and the healing force for such transformational experience through its interconnectedness to nature.

As one of their driving core values, they have committed to rewilding the land with the planting of 350,000 trees this year and next year, with the ultimate goal of planting 1 million trees.

With the intention of healing the land as a part of the collective healing process, they are working with earth energy expert Rev. Dr.Calen Rayne to identify the sacred energy centers of this land.

While steeped in English history, Broughton Hall Estate seeks a higher purpose through spiritual connection, healing and nature in order to serve the world in what they call an era of a “new humanity”.

Their state of the art Avalon wellbeing facility serves as the peaceful hub of personal transformation, self-exploration and creativity. Radiating the energy of intention from its very foundation, blessed energy crystals were symbolically placed in the building’s foundation when it was being built at the estate.

Avalon’s inspired idyllic setting for a sacred and life-changing inner voyage of mind, body and spirit is intended to serve a new way of conscious minded living through their customised private, corporate and individual retreats, classes and therapies and connection to the peaceful surrounding nature.

Callender Howorth Creative Director Mark Howorth explains, “Our aim with this restyling project for their holiday homes is to further elevate the naturally positive and emotional engagement of their spaces. We are really looking forward to considering lighting, organic fabrics and paint and repurposed pieces to transform these homes.  It’s all about making the interior reflect the ethos and energy of Broughton Hall….a fantastic design challenge.”

By infusing wellbeing in every aspect of the design, means we are attending to the inherent needs of raising our human potential required by this new conscious phase of our evolution.

The exquisite outfits from SAFIRO - a new sustainable luxury womenswear brand with a timelessly elegant aesthetic, founded by Yulia Shirokova in London in 2020, embellished the event. The London couture Milliner Edwina Ibbotson created bespoke headpieces to match SAFIRO outfits.

The Marquise de Chambrun trophy winner was Salmson Grand Sport model from July 1924 skiff Henri Labourdette body followed by the Zepter trophy awarded to a Rolls-Royce Silver cloud from 1956, a car which previously belonged to Marcel Boussac. Méthode Tasmanoise - World Class Sparkling Wines Pioneered by Frenchman and Champagne Icon Louis Roederer

“It could be argued we’re completely mad growing grapes in the wild and unforgivingly cold Tasmanian environment. But there’s méthode to our madness.”

Established in 1986, Jansz Tasmania specialises in crafting luxury sparkling wines from Tasmania. In a joint venture with Heemskerk, Louis Roederer recognised the similarities of the Tasmanian climate to that of Champagne and together they planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. DESTINED FOR GREATNESS

It was this foresight which led to the production of the first Tasmanian vintage sparkling wine in 1989 using traditional Méthode Champenoise; a tradition that continues today. Now Australian owned by the Hill-Smith family since 1998, the vineyard was renamed Jansz Tasmania, paying homage to Abel Janszoon Tasman who first sighted the island in 1642. Proudly Tasmanian.

MÉTHODE TASMANOISE

The climatic conditions of the Jansz vineyard rival the famed French wine region of Champagne. In fact, it was originally with French contribution that Jansz became Tasmania’s first sparkling made using the traditional Méthode.

Today we call it, Méthode Tasmanoise. It’s the essence of a partnership between the environment and our winemaker. Just as the cool Tasmanian climate creates spectacular beauty in nature, it is also instrumental in the creation of art in bottles.

The climatic conditions of the Jansz vineyard rival the famed French wine region of Champagne. In fact, it was originally with French contribution that Jansz became Tasmania’s first sparkling made using the traditional Méthode.

PERFECTLY POSITIONED

The Jansz Tasmania vineyard sits to the northeast of the island state within the Pipers River region of the Tamar Valley. This cool little corner is colloquially known as ‘Sparkling Tasmania’.

Temperatures here are moderated by close proximity to Bass Strait. The ocean breezes keep the temperature up during winter – minimising risk of frost, and down in summer – allowing our grapes to ripen slowly and develop intense, delicate and refined flavours.

Resting on a bed of pure, red, free-draining basalt soils, the Jansz vineyard truly is the perfect site to grow grapes for world-class sparkling wines.

Discover the Ports of Monaco - Including the New Port of Ventimiglia, a Soon-to-Open Port at Mareterra and Famed Port Hercules and Fontvieille

Spectacular scenery, luxe amenities, legendary casinos and a lavish lifestyle have long been Monaco’s drawing cards. In addition, the prestigious principality on the Mediterranean Sea is also known as a premier destination for the world’s most luxurious superyachts. The city-state is home to the legendary port of Monaco, Port Hercules, Port Fontvieille, as well as a new port in Ventimiglia and the soon-to-be-completed Mareterra.

A Guide to the Ports of Monaco

Port Hercules
Thousands of international yacht owners and industry executives make it a point to attend the annual Monaco Yacht Show, the world’s premier superyacht exhibition at Port Hercules, the largest port of Monaco. More than 100 superyachts are featured, along with some 600 vendors throughout 42,000 square metres of exhibition space. For those arriving by yacht, whether for the show or as part of a luxury Mediterranean yacht charter, sailing into this famed Monaco port is an event in itself.

The port, just west of the new Mareterra (formerly Portier Cove) marina is one of the few deepwater ports on the French Riviera and serves as the gateway for yachts to the principality. The natural bay is at the foot of the majestic Rock of Monaco, which towers 62-metres above the sea and is the ancestral monolith of the princes of Monaco. Improvements to the port in recent years include a new sea wall, offering protection from eastern swells and providing the perfect berthing location for large pleasure craft.

Port Fontvieille
Further south is the modern harbour of Port Fontvieille, which was built from reclaimed land in 1966. The Monaco port has berthing space for some 160 vessels up to 30-metres in length and with a maximum draft of three-meters. Port  Fontvieille offers a selection of amenities, including restaurants and shops, while its location is within striking distance of Monaco’s famed attractions. Adding extra convenience, this port of Monaco is also just a stone’s throw away from the Monaco heliport.

Monaco Port Ventimiglia
Meanwhile, with the increasing lure of luxury sailing, Monaco has recently expanded its ability to host yachts with the opening of the port in Ventimiglia, just 79 nautical miles (15 to 20 minutes) from its sister marinas at the ports of Hercules and Fontvielle. From Cala Del Forte Ventimiglia, yacht owners and guests will have easy and exclusive access to Monaco, where they are welcome to enjoy all that the principality has to offer.

The port in Ventimiglia hailed the arrival on Oct. 15 of the much-loved sailing yacht TUIGA, the flagship of the Yacht Club of Monaco. The marina’s official inauguration is scheduled for mid-2021, when construction work on land is completed. Meanwhile the waterfront is open, and the state-of-the-art marina is already taking berth reservations.

A New Port at Mareterra
Additional berthing space will also be available at Monaco’s future marina at Mareterraa port made possible by an ambitious eco-friendly $2.3 billion land reclamation projectThe luxury development is scheduled for completion in 2025.

The new marina will be able to accommodate more than a dozen vessels of up to 18-metres, and will feature a host of restaurants and shops, ensuring plenty of opportunities for lively and entertaining outings. Overall, the 6-hectare eco-development will encompass luxury residences, expansive gardens, a promenade and recreational space.

Cruising to the welcoming ports of Monacowhether it be Monaco’s port in Ventimiglia, Port Fontvieille, or famed Port Hercules is always a grand event.

A pulse is an edible seed that grows in a pod. Pulses include all beans, peas and lentils, such as chickpeas (chana or garbanzo beans).

For far too long, dishes with pulses have been considered as poor people's food. But then a number of star chefs showed, how fine the seeds of the garden fruits beans, peas and lentils can taste by serving them as a salad instead of a thick soup or turning them into noble vegetable side dishes. And even within the growing Slow Food movement, the important protein suppliers enjoy a good reputation. The legume cuisine does not get boring so quickly: after all, there are over 12,000 legumes. So regularly use various pulses and enjoy their culinary variety.

The Resilience of the Rock - Monaco’s Property Market Weathers the Global Storm

2020 is drawing to a close and we are taking stock of this extraordinary year. Monaco is still open for business though who would have imagined a year ago that we would be wearing masks outdoors and dispensing with the usual handshakes when meeting someone?

The year has been deeply troubling and 2021 may well throw up further surprises. The world is a different place for sure. What has been heartening in our line of business is to see how resilient the real estate market in Monaco has been, despite lockdowns, curfews and travel restrictions. We are still open for business and November has seen interest from all quarters.

The official stats for the first six months of 2020 came out some time ago: the third quarter’s figures are not yet published. Interestingly the number of re sales (i.e. properties over 5 years old) for the second quarter of 2020, was absolutely identical to the number completed in the second quarter of 2019, and this despite the 2020 lockdown. Pretty remarkable…

And demand continues. We are seeing a good number of requests for smaller investment properties: studios or one beds. There is quite a good selection on the market currently, possibly because previously occupants have decided to rent or buy larger properties post-lockdown. And we believe that the right smaller property can take on value even in difficult times, particularly if it can be renovated and made into a turnkey property.

The apartment we have for sale in Le Bristol is a case in point. It is located on the Grand Prix circuit and nicely refurbished, it makes a great rental property.

And if anyone out there is thinking of selling, we are very much looking for larger properties too for various clients: please do get in touch!

Sustainable viticulture

Cultivating excellence in cohesion with environment to ensure the best possible expression of our terroir in our cuvées, we have adopted viticulture methods which are respectful of the soil and the vine. No anti-rot treatments or insecticides, with the elimination of anti-botrytis treatments since 2000, using of pheromones against grape worms and organic fertilizers and soil conditioners. Treatments are targeted and kept to a minimum.

We only intervene where absolutely necessary to keep our vines strong and healthy. The care we take in cultivating the vine is extended to the vinification of our wines, for which we use a process as most natural as possible. We have adopted a non-interventionist approach to allow full expression to our terroirs and grape varieties. Our wines contain: no enzymes, no fining agent the lowest sulphite amount. Our thermoregulated tanks are only washed with hot water (no use of acids).

Dublin Based Kokoro Zenwear Raises the Standard for Sustainable Eco-Fashion with Bamboo Fashion Collection

The Dublin-based fashion brand offers a luxurious alternative to cotton and silk that doesn’t cost the earth. Kokoro Zenwear’s bamboo silk and bamboo sport collection is 100% ECO Certified and OEKO- TEX Certified sustainable organic.

Eco-conscious fashionistas now have a sustainable alternative to cotton and silk garments with the luxurious bamboo fashion collection from Dublin-based company, Kokoro Zenwear.

Cotton and silk are two popular natural fibres used in garment manufacturing. However, the production processes used to produce the fabrics are neither eco-friendly nor sustainable. Silk is a luxurious fabric, but it takes up to 2500 silkworms to produce one pound of raw silk. And since silkworms only eat mulberry leaves, it is a significant drain on natural resources. As it relates to cotton, the plants require 29.000 litres of water to grow - the same amount that one person would drink in 27 years.

Conversely, not only is bamboo a renewable resource, it requires very little water and can grow up to 4.5 ft per day. What’s more is that fabrics made from bamboo are softer and more comfortable than 1000 thread count Egyptian cotton.
